Cited for gallantry in action by General Pershing and General Bell. The Silver Star Medal is the United States’ third highest award exclusively for combat valor. The Silver Star was not established as an individual medal until July 19, 1932. At that time, veterans of World War I who had been cited for “gallantry in action” and awarded the “Citation Star” were, based upon specific criteria, authorized to request issuance of the Silver Star Medal in lieu of the earlier ribbon device.

Miscellaneous:
On February 2nd 1972 the last Men of L newsletter was issued by the Company Clerk, Lee Reuter who passed October 1972. He noted 25 updates that were provided by the men or their family members to him in 1970 but a stroke prevented him from a more timely newsletter. It is not known how often newsletters were issued. The information reflected the camaraderie of the men even 50 year after the end of WWI.
Newsletter extract: Comrade Thompson’s son wrote his dad, Roger K had died on May 30 1971.
