George COLBY at Camp Logan, Texas (c1917)

George is wearing his uniform and his left sleeve shows Corporal rank insignia. Just above the cuff are three service chevrons. Since he never went to France, it is assumed these are from his first enlistment. So assume he served at least 18 months somewhere out of the country.  Barbara Metzger, daughter of Lee Reuter the Company Clerk researched and discovered that George was 'very sloppy' with the year of his birth; she pinned it down to 1897 as he is 3 in the 1900 census and 13 in the 1910 census. Since he was in the army in 1914 he enlisted at a very young age or else he was given the choice of the army or jail which was a common option at the time.
