Descendants provided information that Private Ripley was assigned as a runner (carrying messages), and was gassed during battles at Verdun and in the Meuse-Argonne. A monument with his name and nine other soldiers was erected in France. The specific monument in France with the names of Private Ripley and nine other soldiers from Company L, 132nd Infantry, 33rd Division, is located in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial in the village of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon.
This cemetery is the largest American military cemetery in Europe and contains the graves of 14,246 American soldiers who died during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
