Find A Grave:
Name: Arthur Albert Petermeier
Birth Date: 8 Jun 1888
Birth Place: Jasper County, Iowa
Death Date: 6 Oct 1918
Death Place: Chateau-Thierry, Departement de l'Aisne, Picardie, France
Cemetery: Restland Cemetery
Burial: Baxter, Jasper County, Iowa

Father: Friedrich Wilhelm Petermeier
Mother: Anna Marie Christine Charlotte Petermeier
Arthur was the last of 13 children born to Friedrich and Anna Petermeier in rural Jasper County east of Baxter. His parents had been born in Germany and the family spoke German and English.

In Friedrich's obituary in 1910 his 13 children were listed as Simon, Fredrick, August, Wilhelmina, Louisa, Charlotta, Wilhelm, Matilda, Mary Sophia, Pauline, Charles, Johann, and Arthur.

When Anna died seven years later in 1917 their children are listed the same, except Arthur is referred to as Albert.

Arthur enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was wounded in an instrumental battle at Chateau-Thierry in 1918 and later died in the base hospital.

The children of Arthur's brother Fredrick recalled their father gathered them together one day and forbade them from speaking German again. Whether his decision was based on his brother Arthur and son John joining the U.S. military, sparked by Arthur's death, or caused by something else is unknown.

From an Iowa death certificate accounting, it appears Arthur's remains were brought back from France and received on July 20, 1921.
