On July 12, 1918 he was transferred from the 44th Infantry to the 3rd Company, Development Battalion, 166th Depot Brigade.

History: The 3rd Company, Development Battalion, 166th Depot Brigade was a World War I U.S. Army training and rehabilitation unit based at Camp Lewis, near Tacoma, Washington. They did not serve in combat. The 3rd Company was part of the 166th Depot Brigade's Development Battalion. An official history of Washington State confirms that in the latter part of August 1918, men were received from the 166th Depot Brigade and assigned to its Development Battalion. In many cases, recruits passed through depot brigades for processing before being assigned to more specialized units for further training or deployment.

History: 13th Infantry Division (United States)
• Activation and purpose: The 13th Division was established at Camp Lewis, Washington, on July 16, 1918, in response to the massive mobilization for World War I. Its mission was to train and prepare for combat in France.
• Composition: As a "square division," it consisted of four infantry regiments: the 1st, 44th, 75th, and 76th Infantry Regiments. Draftees, primarily from western states like California, Oregon, and Washington, filled the ranks of the unit.
• Nickname: The division was nicknamed the "Lucky 13th." Its soldiers even adopted a fight song with the refrain: "With those thirteen stripes as our only mascot / The 13th Division must win / For we'll never stop, on the long, long trail / Till we're thirteen miles past Berlin".
• The Spanish Flu: In the fall of 1918, the division was hit by the deadly Spanish influenza pandemic. The base reported its first cases in September, and by the end of October, a quarantine was ordered to control the spread of the disease.
• Demobilization: The war ended with the armistice on November 11, 1918, before the 13th Division could deploy. Troops began being released within days of the armistice, and demobilization was nearly complete by February 1919. The division was officially deactivated on March 19, 1919.
