Information provide by his grandson:

Ambrose Daniel Plamondon left school after completing the 9th grade. Two years later, and one year after his mother drowned in the Eastland Disaster, he joined the army at 17. To enlist, he lied about his age, claiming to have been born in 1898 (false) rather than 1900 (true), leading to a discrepancy in government records that followed him all his life.

During the Great War, he was a farrier’s assistant, shoeing horses. Family lore is that he qualified as an expert marksman on the M1911 pistol, Springfield rifle, and Chauchat machine gun. The associated pay bonuses increased his pay by nearly 1/3.

After the war, he was a police officer with the Chicago Park Police. He was a motorcycle officer and shattered his leg in a motorcycle accident while on the job; he received a medical disability. His leg ached badly during Chicago winters, so he built a small travel trailer, which he towed behind his car as he and his family traveled between Florida and California during the early 1930s. His uncle, Louis Plamondon, was a well-known clown with the Ringling Brothers circus (and others). My grandfather took his family to spend winters with him at the Ringling Brothers Winter Quarters in Sarasota, FL. They spent summers in Laguna Beach, California, where his wife Dolly’s aunt lived.

With his WW1 bonus in 1936, he bought a farm property in Pomona, California, where he raised and showed pigmy pouter pigeons. He later moved to Long Beach, California, and worked as a security guard at Hughes Aircraft Company for many years until he retired. He later joined his son’s family in Crescent City, California, where they developed and operated a campground near the Redwood National Park.

Ambrose Plamondon died in 1974 and is buried in Veterans Memorial Cemetery there.
